As Is Your Usual, You Are Not The Problem (No Matter What You Think)

If you want to lose weight, and you think that your *problem* is that you have trouble delaying gratification, here’s some really good news on that front.

You’re wrong.

Very.

(Yes. I’m shouting.)

The problem is not a matter of willpower.

(You have plenty of that.)

When something makes sense to you…

when an action is connected to what you value…

when there is more of an upside than a downside to doing it, you will do it.

The reality is that you’re an expert at delaying gratification.

A quick check of your calendar shows that you have been waiting for… forever to be happy with your body.

You have delayed eating what you really like to eat until you’ve lost weight, and have earned the right to eat what you want.

You can go for long periods of time without thinking a kind thought about the parts of your body that you wish looked different.

You have put a hold on being happy, until you do the right thing by being thin.

You have withheld your approval from yourself, until you feel like you are behaving like you deserve it.

You have denied yourself the full measure of your appreciation, until you are wearing the size you want to wear.

You have put off feeling good about yourself, until you feel like you look like someone who is entitled to those kinds of feelings.

An important note…

You do have very good reasons to keep feeling good about yourself at arms length.

If you feel good about yourself the way you are now, you are worried that you will stop working to change what you feel needs to be changed, and then that would make you feel bad.

In fact, your very good reasons for feeling bad are why you’ve never, ever had to use the *force of your will* to make you, feel bad about you.

Your very good reasons are why feeling bad about you has been easy, why you haven’t had to work at it, why you’ve been at the ready with your self-loathing and badgering and belittling.

(It comes hot and heavy and is often preceded by no more than a glance to you, from you.)

This is not how you were born or destined to feel about yourself, but can you even imagine having to work at feeling bad about you?

I want you to do more than imagine it.

I want you to find it uncomfortable and difficult to muster up the energy for the self-loathing and badgering and belittling.

Which brings us to you doing more of what comes easily to you.

The next time you think you can’t wait until you are hungry to eat, remember.

Waiting is your forte.

Since we have established that, actually, you’re very good at waiting…

Compare how long you’ll probably *have* to wait until you’re hungry, to the amount of time that you’ve been waiting to be comfortable in your own skin.

(No really, how long is that?  Let me know in the comments.  For me, it was about 3-5 hours vs. about 25 years.)

(Which makes that approximately 3-5 hours vs. approximately 219,000 hours.  But who’s counting.)

You’ve been waiting to be feel good about yourself longer than you’ve probably waited for anything.

Just how hungry are you, to feel good about yourself?

Before you answer that… you not feeling good about the way you look, and the way you feel around food, is connected to an important value to you.

(And that reality is important for us to explore more.)

But never let it be said, especially by you, that your problem is that you can’t delay your gratification.

It’s the truth about you that will set you free.

I’d love to hear your thoughts about this reality about you…. let’s talk more in the comments.

P.S. If you want to read more en*lightening* truths about you, click here.

If you also want to hear enlightening truths, specifically about you, let’s talk.

(Because as good as you are at waiting, it doesn’t mean that you aren’t tired of doing it, and of feeling like a problem trying to be an answer.)

And of course, please pass this on to anyone who is ready for the true truth :-) about herself.  Much appreciated!
